USRA at San Antonio Speedway: Smith Meets "The Bump"

San Antonio, TX (April 4, 2005) - Casey Smith piloted his No. 99 Rapid Disposal Chevrolet into the top-ten before he hit “the bump” sending him to the garage for good just 34 laps into the USRA Super Late Model Event Saturday evening at the San Antonio Speedway. Smith finished 19th out of the 22 drivers to put an explanation point on a bad weekend.

Smith rolled off the starting grid at the end of the pack.  He was unable to qualify due to the car not starting as he was going out for his time trials.  Smith quickly moved through the field to enter the top 10 just 25 laps into the race. Setting his sight on the lead pack at lap 34, Smith got loose and the #99 hit the wall.

“This has been the worse week-end of my racing career.  We missed practice Friday because we had a water leak in the engine, fixed that.  We went out for practice this morning and the engine was running on only 7 cylinders, thought we had that fixed, then missed qualifying because when we went out to qualify the car would not start.  I replaced the MSD box and at the start of the race everything seemed fine.  I hit the historic bump on the back stretch, had pressure from behind, the car jumped out from underneath me and I got into the wall.  All in all, it wasn’t a great weekend.”

The next event for the Casey Smith Racing Team will be Event #2 – Thunderhill Raceway Park April 23rd
