Final Weekend Double of the Season for Casey Smith Racing
Austin, TX 9/23/08- As the temperature around the Southeast starts to cool off, it just means that the racing action is heating up. Casey Smith and company will do the last Pensacola-Mobile mini series double of the year this weekend before turning their attention to the historic and usually larger paying events to close out the 2008 racing season.
The action will get started Friday night at Pensacola where the team sits third in the championship points standings, 110 points out of first place. While it may be a long shot for Casey Smith to be crowned the 2008 Blizzard mini series champion, the hopes of scoring a provisional for the 41st Annual Snowball Derby is what’s on the mind of the young Texas racer. But just by looking at the points standings one can tell Casey will have his work cut out for him as both Mitch Cobb and Augie Grill, the round three Blizzard series winner, are within ten and twenty points of Smith’s third place position he currently holds.
“We’ve got some guys right on our heels as far as points go, but if we can just bring home a top five finish with the car all in one piece I’d be happy. We’ve had so many crazy things happen to us this season we just need to have a good run and really focus on what the car is doing because this will be our last tune up before the derby come December,” said Smith.
On Saturday the team will take their final laps of the ’08 season around the super fast Mobile International Speedway. It may seem like same song, same story as Casey is sixth in points heading into the season finale but only seventy out of the top spot so it’s really anyone’s game and with the success Smith has amassed at the track over the years it has him thinking he still has a chance to repeat as the Mobile mini series champion.
“This weekend at Mobile should be a fun one, we had the last race rained out so it’s left first through tenth separated by only 100 points so who knows what will and could happen. We haven’t won there all year and last year we won there once and finished in the top three the rest of the time. The best way for us to have a shot at winning the championship is just to go out, win the race and hope the rest of it takes care of itself,” added Casey.
